Newman’s Marko Veledinovic has always had big dreams.
The 21-year-old, whose father is a machine operator with BHP in the town, followed his own aspirations of working in the financial and mining industry to Perth, where he has now found employment in his chosen field after completing a degree in accounting and finance.
As head boy at Newman Senior High School back in 2017, Marko was given the task of arranging a guest speaker for his Year 12 graduation ceremony.
Not one to aim low, Marko approached high-profile Western Australian businessman Andrew Forrest through his corporate channels with an invitation to speak.
“As it turned out, Andrew couldn’t make it, but he was kind enough to email me personally to let me know,” Marko said.
Marko made good use of that initial contact the following year after he moved to Perth to study at Curtin University, contacting Dr Forrest personally to enquire about the possibility of a part-time job at the magnate’s private investment group, Tattarang, while he studied.
“As things progressed, I was offered a job in the finance division. It was pretty exciting,” he said.
Marko is grateful to his parents Zoran and Jelica for their unwavering support of everything he and his younger brother Damijan wanted to do growing up.
The couple migrated from Serbia in the 1990s, arrived in Newman more than 20 years ago and still live in the town.
“We were always a working family. My parents both worked hard and expected us to do the best we can at whatever we do,” Marko said.
With his university degree completed, Marko is excited to have accepted a full-time investment analyst role with Wyloo Metals (a company of Tattarang) particularly as it enables him to retain links to the mining industry that underpins the Pilbara economy, and to give something back to the community that supported him throughout his education.
“I’m keen to find ways to support more young people from regional WA to achieve their goals,” he said.
Congratulations Marko on your successes so far! We look forward to seeing all the great things you go on to achieve in the Newman community and beyond.
