Home in East Newman!

Shaun Petersen from the KJ Leadership Group leads the team on a tour of East Newman and surrounds.

The Home in East Newman project has officially begun!

This 12-week project will ensure that East Newman is a connected, safe and comfortable place to live. Home in East Newman is not your standard town planning process, it is a combined plan to improve housing, landscaping, community services and amenity – delivered in close partnership with Martu and Nyiyaparli community members and local stakeholders.

Over the last few weeks, Creating Communities and Hames Sharley have met with a wide range of local organisations and groups to discuss the project, this included Shire of East Pilbara, BHP executives and staff, Department of Communities, Martu leaders, Martumili artists, EPIS, KJ, Department of Education, Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage and DevelopmentWA. These discussions focused on ideas for improving housing, connectivity, community services, safety and amenity in the area.

Thank you to the KJ Leadership Group, Martumili, Desmond Taylor, BHP and the Department of Communities for showing our team around East Newman.

As two incredibly significant groups in our community, Martu and Nyiyaparli community members have been integral to all stages of the Home in East Newman project. Earlier in June, the project team worked closely with Martumili artists to understand what home looks like in East Newman to the Martu community, and what it could look like in the future. Artworks and conversations from this engagement has now been interpreted by Hames Sharley, the project’s architecture and urban design consultancy.

“Everyone has ideas and plans for how East Newman could become a better place to live and spend time. Home in East Newman is an opportunity for the community and organisations to work together in a new way and transform East Newman together.”

- Joseph Sollis, Creating Communities

In the coming weeks, there is a couple of options available for you to get involved in the project.

Monday 19 October from 3pm to 7pm

Join the Home in East Newman team at a drop-in session at Martumili. Our team will be available to hear your thoughts, chat about the project, and answer any questions you may have. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Wednesday 21 October from 10am – 2pm and Thursday 22 October from 10am to 2pm

Additional workshops will be delivered at Martumili. These workshops will be open to all Nyiyaparli and Martu community members, and the project team is looking forward to listening and learning how we can work together to make East Newman a better place for all people.

We will continue to provide updates as this vital initiative continues to progress.
