Home in East Newman: new strategies and services to address social need in the Pilbara

In late 2020, the Home in East Newman project set out with the mission of bringing people together to make East Newman a comfortable, safe and connected place to live.

Since its launch in September 2020, this project has facilitated more than 50 engagement opportunities with the residents of East Newman in a co-design process to blueprint the future of housing, landscaping, services and amenities.

Through the co-design process, community members shared their ideas on what East Newman could look like in the future, what makes it feel like home and how East Newman can better reflect the needs and aspirations of the local community. The workshops informed a Social Plan that is now being put into action through the East Newman Activation Program. This program responds to the needs heard from East Newman residents and will lay strong foundations for longer term interventions.

The East Newman Activation Program launched in early April with the aim of engaging and connecting the community through a series of activities in a central hub. Community and service providers are invited to join the program and provide education and learning opportunities, build cultural awareness and deliver opportunities for children and young people to play, learn or spend time together in East Newman.

Commencing with a number of regular small-scale initiatives, the activation program will continue to collaborate with key partners to grow a comprehensive schedule of activity for the whole East Newman community at Miners Promise Park (Train Park).

As the program continues, the team and stakeholders have continued to learn from the children, young people and families about their vision for East Newman.

Some of our highlights include:

  • Partnering with Puntukurnnu Aboriginal Medical Service to host a monthly health and wellbeing BBQ
  • Partnering with NWS for a range of weekly activities for the whole family
  • Partnering with Ngurra Kujungka to deliver an extension of their School Holiday program in April

Thank you to everyone who has supported the East Newman Activation Program by providing educational activities and the opportunities for children and families to come together.

We are so excited for the upcoming initiatives in East Newman. Make sure you keep an eye out for a digital play trail, a community art project, a series of clean-up day initiatives.
