We had a great time last night at the Stronger Business Futures event!

The evening covered all things local business, with presentations, information and Q&As on how together, we can work to grow a vibrant economy in Newman.

“As a company, BHP is highly invested in this town, which means we are highly invested in the wellbeing of people, and the success of local businesses” Marie Bourgoin, General Manager for BHP’s Newman Operations, said. “And as a matter of fact, it was local businesses and residents who filled some critical roles for our business at the peak of the pandemic.”

The event was hosted to thank local business owners for their contributions during the COVID-19 response and to outline the emerging economic stimulus measures for the local economy.

The Shire of East Pilbara, BHP, C-Res and the Newman Chamber of Commerce and Industry have all been supporting businesses over the past few months and were all present at the event to announce new and emerging stimulus and business support packages.

Tony McRae, CEO of Western Desert Lands Aboriginal Corporation and Desmond Taylor, a respected Martu interpreter also spoke at the event. They emphasised the importance of supporting and bringing together Martu, Nyiyarparli and non-Aboriginal people to ensure all cultures are respected and equal no matter what the business or industry.

Some of the local stimulus packages and support to businesses available includes:

  • The Shire of East Pilbara Dollars Project which offers incentives to spend a local business which have lost revenue due to COVID-19
  • The BHP and C-Res Local Buying Program which provides opportunities for small local businesses to competitively bid for supply opportunities that are released by BHP’s Western Australia Iron Ore operations
  • The Launchpad Program supported by the Newman Chamber of Commerce and Industry to provide workshops and opportunities for local businesses in the Pilbara region to learn new things, build their capacity and strengthen their business and
  • The Shire of East Pilbara One-on-One Business Advice to provide support for small businesses located in the East Pilbara region.

A big thank you to all those who attended and to all our Newman local businesses. As was acknowledged at the event, local businesses provide the backbone for the Newman community. Thank you also to the Shire of East Pilbara, BHP, C-Res, the Newman Chamber of Commerce, Parnawarri and Western Desert Lands Aboriginal Corporation for helping to make the event happen.
